So now that PoetsandQuants is well on its way, we're working on the design of our next website: Slingshots for David. The idea is simple: it's a site to provide tools and ideas to help entrepreneurs. Sure, there are lots of sites aimed at the small business and entrepreneurship market. Our Gypsy Rose Lee gimmick is to examine entrepreneurship from the perspective of the disrupter. So our lens will be disruptive business models and the disrupters themselves: How they think? How they create disruptive models to compete? What we can learn from them?
Which leads me to this: What do you think of the logo above?

The David and Goliath reference makes me think this will be a business site run by evangelical Christians.
ReplyDeleteI was a little surprised at the biblical reference. Other than that, I like the logo. I think it has good form and thought. Clever play on words. I'd kern slingshots closer to for and for closer to david. It needs to tighten up. Overall, good logo...when you take out that it's got a biblical reference. That kind of cancels it out unfortunately. It alienates people regardless of religion.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brigid's points; the typeface is reminiscent of the logo for Poets and Quants...but that is the goal, right?

ReplyDeleteI'm with Brigid, regardless of the David reference, it's clear that the site is for providing ammo for little scrappy entrepreneurs with the tools to take on the Goliath obstacles that stand in the way of a successful business. Tighten it up a bit and you're well on your way.
ReplyDeleteI love the name (I think of D&G as a children's story more than what it is, an Old Test't story). Don't like this logo design though - feels too academic and passive. I say make it more modern and rely a bit more on the weapon in the name (which is after all what you're selling). Make "Slingshots" the dominant part of the name. It's powerful! Use a stronger, more modern (simple) font. (This font is too old school, too academic in its typeface.) Then the David reference should be supportive (the reveal). Do this with a smaller font, stacked below the Slingshot. Just my thoughts ....
ReplyDeletePrime the slingshot with the title and to avoid the biblical reference use something different from David but perhaps descriptive like Upstarts, Entrepreneurs.
ReplyDeleteAs I noticed four stones remain with the slingshot, I remembered that David had picked up five stones. Such would indicate that the first stone had been fired at the giant. It is said that one stone is all it took. Great logo!
